Please provide a comprehensive extended statement of services
that will clearly demonstrate to the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign Advisory
Council your qualifications for participation in the CVC as related to
the services listed below. Additionally, discuss the eligibility requirements
for an applicant to receive services. What determines the amount of aid
provided? If charges are made for services rendered, how are levels determined
and in what cases are the charges waived, if any?
LVNRVs' vision is the empowerment of every adult in the New River Valley through the provision of opportunities to achieve independence through literacy.
We are committed to:
1. Increasing literacy for adults who function below the fifth grade reading level, for their families and for those seeking to learn English as a second language;
2. Effectively training, utilizing, and supporting our volunteers and staff;
3. Providing training and generating community support relative to the various aspects of literacy;
4. Serving as an advocate for literacy.
We believe that the ability to read and write is critical to personal development, freedom, and the maintenance of a democratic society. Our services provided are free to the general public. We practice a non-discriminatory policy and do not bias the provision of services according to gender, financial standing, physical challenge, race, creed, nationality, or sexual orientation. We support the Virginia Literacy Initiative and the Virginia Adult Learning System, and participate in the Initiative's bi-lateral referral system. We pro-actively recruit students and tutors and provide education programs to the community whenever possible. We support the rights of our students and tutors and protect them with a policy of confidentiality. We recognize the individual value of each of our students, volunteers and staff.
Services:
Free, confidential one-on-one tutoring for adults reading below the fifth-grade level and adults needing English as a second language; family literacy programs to address the problem of inter-generational illiteracy; publicity and advocacy to increase awareness of the importance of literacy to the New River Valley. |
