St Jude Children's Research Hospital: Carson's Story

CarsonAfter a week of virus-like symptoms, Carson was taken to the doctor for what her parents believed to be a routine visit.  This visit would change their lives forever.  In November of 1999, a ball-size tumor was found in the lower part of Carson’s brain.

The tumor was immediately removed.  Test results confirmed that it was cancerous and further treatment would be needed.  On Thanksgiving Day, Carson’s family received a call from Dr. Larry Kun, a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital physician and one of the premier pediatric cancer researchers in the United States.  After much discussion, her parents decided to pack their bags and head to the Hospital in Memphis.

After their arrival, Carson’s family quickly learned from the patients riding on tricycles, to ones being pulled around in toy-filled wagons that St. Jude is a hospital built around the needs of children.  Seeing St. Jude and meeting the dedicated professionals at the Hospital restored this family’s hope that their daughter would beat cancer.

While at St. Jude, Carson underwent 33 radiation treatments designed specifically to eliminate any existing cancer cells left after surgery.  After completing treatment, Carson and her family returned home to Virginia.  Carson continued to return to St. Jude every three months for an MRI and other tests.

We are happy to report Carson is now cancer-free.  Like a normal little girl, she enjoys playing with dolls, watching cartoons and going to the beach.
