New River Community: Birth of a New Beginning
Eighteen year old Beth has experienced more than her share of hardship in her young life, but with the assistance of the New River Community Action’s CHIP program, part of the CHIP of Virginia network, she and her family are moving in a positive direction.
Beth left home at 15 with no family support. At 17, she became pregnant. She and her partner, Tim, did not know where to find prenatal and parenting advice. Scared and feeling lost, Beth learned of CHIP of New River Valley.
Beth was worried about the health of her unborn child. A fetal test indicated signs of abnormality. The CHIP team provided Beth with emotional support and education on fetal development and prenatal nutrition.
Happily, Ellie was born in August of 2006 without complications. Three months later Ellie was diagnosed with sleep apnea and sent home with a monitor. The CHIP team provided education about Ellie’s condition and helped the couple enroll in an infant CPR class, strengthening their confidence in caring for Ellie.
Tim has secured steady employment and the young family now has safe housing. Beth is working toward a nursing degree. The family is happy and future-oriented. They say that the CHIP program has been a tremendous support in helping them become a healthy and productive family.
