CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF EASTERN VIRGINIA
Getting Help With Medication
Amy Thomas is calm and able to contend with life’s challenges now that she doesn’t have to worry about how to pay for her prescription medication. Since she has the daily medicine she requires, she is free of the mood swings and depression that once affected her.
Amy benefits from The Pharmacy Connection, a program administered by Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia which provides prescription medications--at little or no cost-- to qualified low income individuals with chronic illnesses. The program is made possible under a grant from the Riverside Health System Foundation.
Before Amy had access to The Pharmacy Connection, she had to pay out of pocket for her prescriptions, which often meant relying on family members to pick up the expense, using drug samples given by her doctor, or simply going without medication. It was a stressful situation until Amy heard about Catholic Charities’ prescription access program.
“I really don’t know what I would have done without the help provided by Catholic Charities,” she said. “If I had to pay for my own medicine, we would not be able to afford rent, food or anything. We wouldn’t be able to live.”
Amy Thomas lives with her husband and four young children in Newport News. This fall, she will return to school with plans of becoming a registered nurse.
