England Run North Tornado
On the evening of May 8th, 2008 the residents of England Run North subdivision in Stafford County were enjoying a quiet Thursday evening when at 10:55 pm an E2 tornado ripped thru their neighborhood. Thankfully no one was killed but within minutes there was extensive damage to their homes.
The tornado came and went within minutes but the increment weather continued. First responders evacuate all resident to a pre establish Red Cross shelter within Gail Middle School.
That evening Red Cross volunteers stood ready to shelter, feed and comfort tornado victims. It was a long night as residents waited to return to their homes but the Red Cross volunteers were there by their sides.
The school gym was transformed into a hotel, a restaurant and a counseling center. Red Cross volunteers were the smiling faces that greeted England Run residents at the door of the shelter, the helpful hands that wrapped the children in dry blankets and the kind spirits that provided them warm meals.
The relief operation that evening demonstrated that when an emergency strikes or a disaster hits, the communities’ compassion is transformed into action through the American Red Cross.
