The Foundation for the Advancement of Music and Education (FAME)
FAME is dedicated to cultivating and creating educational opportunities for children and young adults. FAME is committed to enriching the overall literacy in the community via music, the performing arts and the humanities. FAME sponsored A Family Literacy Day at the Theatre, a fun educational bus trip for 200 plus at-risk children from all over the region. They experienced the world premiere of Mirandy and Brother Wind, a production about a young girl eager to win a cakewalk competition who ended up learning some lessons in humility and respect along the way. The children, with bright eyes and smiles, in the audience were also captivated by those lessons. FAME is proud to be in the forefront of building and sustaining strong communities through a holistic, well-rounded arts-focused education.
Prior to the trip, study groups were formed for the children and family members to read and discuss the book. At the end of the play, the children had an opportunity to meet and have dialogue with the cast members. As a result of this experience, several ongoing reading groups have been formed.
When children are exposed to music and the arts they become critical thinkers and high academic achievers eager to contribute positively to the world.
